Wasp Attack! part 2, in the middle of the night

Read Now

Picture
I thought I was good to go with this wasp sting. I took a couple more doses of Ledum if any pain crept up and by the time I went to bed, I thought I was over it.

Nope. I guess this thing was a 1-2-3 punch!

I was awakened by a household noise about midnight. As I got out of bed, my foot pounded with pain. I took another dose of Ledum and tried to get back to sleep. Nope. I took a higher potency of Ledum and tried to get back to sleep. Nope. I tried some homeopathic Coffea cruda which is known to help sleep to come when there is pain. Nope. I was awake for about an hour trying to figure out what remedy to try next while I was trying to will the pain away and let sleep come. It really hurt badly.

I eventually decided on homeopathic Hypericum 200c. I slept the rest of the night. And, I did pretty well most of the next day.

I was sound asleep and awakened the next night at 3 am. This time with intense itching. Had someone offered to amputate it at that moment, I would have seriously entertained the idea. It was like the worst athlete's foot I have ever had, multiplied by a lot! It was miserable! Hypericum did nothing. Coffea did nothing.

I then went to an excellent homeopathic "itchy" remedy, Arsenicum album 30c. (Arsenicum is part of the Banerji Protocol for eczema, that's how good it is for itchiness.) It worked. I slept the rest of the night. This time I awakened the next morning and the itching was still there, just not as acutely. Arsenicum only barely worked now. I ran out of the 30c and all I had left was 3c which was of no help in this situation. [REMINDER: if you don't have the right remedy on hand, it's not going to help you!]

But, I did have the combination remedy of Hypericum 200c + Arsenicum album 200c. This is the Banerji's first line protocol for animal and human bites (Banerji and Banerji 2013). Animal and human bites are considered puncture wounds. Wasps leave puncture wounds and thus I decided it was worth a try. Relief came. But, again, only for a little while.

My toe, at this point was stiff and red and a little warm. It felt OK, and then it doesn't. There is no sign of a stinger left in there. It's localized only to that toe and it is not spreading up my foot.

At my husband's suggestion, I soaked it first in hot water with Epsom salts. Aaaahhh. That felt good. Then, I followed his next suggestion and soaked it in ice water. That, too, felt good. In short, it felt good as long as it was in the water. As soon as it came out out of the water, that's when it started to hurt.

I reached out to a homeopath friend who recently had a bad reaction to a bee sting. She suggested Plantago Major mother tincture. Now, that is soothing stuff! I've read about it many times, but I have never tried it. (This little bottle is moving into my medicine cabinet and will now be one of the first things I grab.)

So, I have now soaked it in both hot and cold. I have doused it with Plantago major. Now, I will alternate between Arsenicum album 200c (for the itchiness) and Urtica urens 200c.

Homeopathic Urtica urens is potentized (homeopathic) stinging nettle. It is well known for allergic reaction, edema and itching. I think these three bold-type symptoms in Murphy's Repertory for Urtica urens covers what's going on in my toe. (Note: I don't know that I am having an allergic reaction, but it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility.)

About 15 minutes after the first dose of Urtica, my toe is a little less stiff, but the itching is worse … hence the decision to alternate these two remedies. The Arsenicum calmed the itching. The stiffness remains, though lessened.

I will alternate these two remedies, as needed, for the next few hours. If the stiffness goes away, I'll back off the Urtica. If the itching lessens, I'll back off on the Arsenicum album.

And, I'll cross my fingers because I have had good amelioration 2 days in a row after taking well indicated remedies and I have been surprised 2 nights in a row.

I'll keep you posted!

Wasp Attack! part 1

I was sitting out on the patio this afternoon for what is most likely the last beautiful 80 degree day of the year, when a yellow thing with a stinger started nosing around my sandaled foot.

Long ago I learned to not hit a bee or a wasp with my negative waves, so I shooed it away gently and turned my chair the other direction and promptly forgot about it.

Until the little !?@*! swooped in the gap in my sandal and stung me under my second toe! Bam! Out of the blue! No provocation of any kind! I flew out of my seat. I dropped my computer to the ground and retreated inside, cursing and limping and wondering what the heck just happened!

Luckily for me, just inside that door is where I keep my stash of homeopathic remedies. I immediately grabbed Ledum palustre 30c and threw some pellets under my tongue. I took a dose, waited for the pain to subside (which it did quite quickly), and then I started writing this article. About 15-20 minutes later, my toe started to throb and ache again, so I repeated the remedy and will continue to do so if and when the pain returns.

Why 30c and not another potency? To be completely honest, the 30c is the first thing my hand touched and I didn’t want to take the time to think about it. I just wanted the pain gone. Had I given it any thought, I probably would have chosen 200c.

Homeopathic Ledum is the first remedy to think of for stings and bites and puncture wounds of any kind.

Other than sneaky wasp attacks, where else would we see the usefulness of a homeopathic remedy for puncture wounds? … … … (I’ll wait while you fill in the blank.) … … … Yes! You’ve got it. Not that I am trying to get noticed by the Internet censors, but Ledum is the first remedy to consider following a puncture wound that stems from the pointy end of a plastic vial filled with liquid. After all, an injection site is, in simple terms, a puncture wound.

If one is suffering general ill effects following a puncture wound from the hands of a trained professional, Ledum should be the first thing you try. If other issues arise following that injectable fluid, a more specific homeopathic remedy should be given. For this, I suggest you work with a professional homeopath.

More pokey things that Ledum can help: bites from any kind of being (dogs, rodents, mosquitoes; ticks; bedbugs); goat’s head prickers (oh, these are nasty little things!); wounds from fixing a barbed wire fence or being poked by a branch. Ledum doesn’t care how the puncture wound got there, it just wants to help you feel better.

And, don’t forget your pets — they, too, can benefit from Ledum following a flea infestation.

Another time Ledum can come in handy is if a needle biopsy is in order. In this situation, take Ledum 200c just before the puncture and again as soon as possible afterward.

Should you find you are suffering an allergic reaction from a bee sting and Ledum is not doing the job, try Apis mellifica for bites/stings that swell up, are hot and resemble hives.

If the Ledum fails to act after acting well, some remedies that might follow well and are worth a try: Hypericum, Apis and Staphysagria.

If itching is part of this experience, Arsenicum album may help.

Remember homeopathic Ledum for those sneaky wasp attacks and any other unexpected (or even expected) puncture wounds.

PTSD

Read Now

Picture
Rufus was acting strangely tonight. He was pacing back and forth from the door to his bed to the other side of me and back again. I talked to him. I opened the door for him. He went out once, walked around the house and came back in through his personal door and then he continued this strange behavior. I petted him. I gave him water. He didn’t seem particularly distressed, just really restless.

Additionally, he was panting. The panting is not unusual, in and of itself. He’s a big dog with a lot of hair and we live in a desert. But, tonight, it’s a cool autumnal evening, so it was definitely out of the ordinary behavior. Panting can be a sign of anxiety in dogs (Helmer 2020) and we have seen other signs from him showing some anxiety over the years.

What to do?

Homeopathic Ignatia 200c delivered to him in a small bowl of bone broth. Within a few minutes the pacing stopped and he was lying on his bed. The panting stopped and started for a few more minutes but then stopped all together and he eventually settled into a nice, rhythmic breath.

How did I come to the idea of giving him Ignatia?

Ignatia Amara 200c is part of the Banerji protocol for mental shock, both immediate and in the past, making it an excellent remedy for PTSD — for dogs and for humans.

PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can be an absolutely debilitating condition stemming from any number of situations: abuse of all kinds and occurring at any age, now or in the past; being in or witnessing an accident; experiencing a natural disaster; combat exposure; physical assault or any life-threatening event. As renown homeopath Dr. Robin Murphy says, a person has a toxic memory that haunts them; they can’t eliminate it. The person is on heightened alert and the toxic memory is overwhelming their life.

PTSD can lead to depression and anxiety; substance abuse; eating disorders; sleeplessness; irritability or angry outbursts; overwhelming guilt or shame.

Farokh Master, MD and homeopath notes that stress causes disease and  disease causes stress leading to a vicious circle. Dr. Master cited a study finding that individuals diagnosed with a stress-related disorder were more likely to be diagnosed with an auto-immune disease*.  It's important to address these mental and emotional issues before they lead to further physical or emotional degeneration.

If PTSD is the diagnosis, try Ignatia 200c and Coffea cruda 200c, each twice daily until significant improvement is seen. (Note: this may take many weeks or even months). Ignatia is not the only remedy for PTSD. If you do not see any improvement, work with a professional homeopath to find a better suited remedy.

Coffea cruda is an excellent remedy for insomnia in general and those repeating thoughts that plague in the night… when you just can't shut your brain off.

In the case of an acute mental shock, give one dose of Ignatia and see if any relief is found. If there is some improvement but the symptoms return, repeat the remedy until very much better. An acute mental shock could be: a parent dealing with a sick child; witnessing an accident; experiencing the death of a loved one; receiving bad news or experiencing a fright; sadness or worry; separation anxiety as well as experiencing general anxiety or any psychological stress short term.

Back to Rufus. A few years ago, Rufus came to us following what appeared to be a pretty hard life. He was only 80 pounds (now he’s about 130) and his coat was a mess and he was very itchy. His teeth were in a bad way. He stunk. He cowered easily, expecting who knows what. He was afraid of traffic. Though the vet judged him to be about 4 or 5 years old, he had to be taught how to walk on a leash. Yes, we are pretty sure he had it pretty rough before he got here.

What could have been troubling him tonight? I’m not sure. There was a particularly hyped up teenage on-line video game going on in the next room, but that isn’t completely out of the ordinary. A little wind outside tonight, but not too bad. Or, just doggie senses on high alert, perhaps.

Often when the correct homeopathic remedy is given in an acute situation, sleep follows soon after. In the case of old Rufus who spends a lot of time sleeping anyway, it’s kind of hard to tell if it was the Ignatia or if he was just doing his normal thing. But, given his odd behavior 10 minutes earlier and the almost immediate change following the Ignatia, I’m going with the idea that this was the correct remedy for him at this moment.

PTSD can put an enormous damper on living a full and happy life and homeopathy may help. Contact me to see if homeopathy could possibly help you or your loved one.

Ear Infections

Read Now

Picture
My little fellow and I once stayed home from a family trip after the doctor suggested if he were to get on a plane that there was a high likelihood of him suffering a burst eardrum. He had an ear infection, but he was still happy enough and playing and didn’t seem sick in any other way, but we decided to err on the side of caution and he and I stayed home and the others flew away.

We stayed on the ground and, yup, the eardrum burst. Awakening to a little one screaming in such terrible pain in the middle of the night is a frightening experience. The good news with a burst ear drum is that the pain can subside very quickly and he was able to sleep the rest of the night and was pretty much back to normal the next day.

I was lucky enough to never experience ear infections as a kid. I did, however, have an ear infection as an adult and, boy, did that give me a new level of compassion for any little person who is not able to explain what is happening and be able to ask for help.

I awakened with this ear pain, a few years after my son had his ear infection. I literally could not lift my head off the pillow … For hours and hours, I was stuck to the pillow. Any time I attempted to lift my head, the pain was so intense I had to put it right back down where it was.

It was a Sunday. For some reason, I had my Doctor of Oriental Medicine’s cell phone number. I called it and apologized for interrupting her day out hiking with her son and explained what was happening. She instructed me to send someone to Whole Foods to buy homeopathic Belladonna 30c and Similisan Ear Drop Relief ™ *.

Within 15 minutes I was able to lift my head off the pillow, pain free, for a few minutes. Then I had to put my head back down again. I took another dose of Belladonna and another drop in my ear and a few minutes later the whole thing was gone. Done. Over. By this time it was late afternoon and I was able to re-join the world and get up and make dinner for my family. (I don't know if it was the Belladonna or the drop that did the trick and, frankly, I don't care!)

Shocked is a good way to describe how I felt. How on earth did that possibly happen?

Let’s take a look at these homeopathic ear remedies and see how they likely helped.

Belladonna:
A Belladonna ear pain is sudden and intense, often throbbing or pulsating and the affected area may also be deep red in color and may have intense heat. The person most likely doesn’t want to move or be jostled. (You'll know this is the case if you sit down on the bed next to them and they object to you bumping the bed.) The pains are often better from pressure (like the benefit I was receiving from having my head on the pillow).

Similisan Ear Drop Relief contains homeopathic Chamomilla, Mercurius sol and Sulphur — all of which, like Belladonna, are highly indicated remedies for ear infections.

Chamomilla:
Someone in need of Chamomilla may exhibit irritability and anger with an abnormal sensitivity to pain. Restless and demanding, and the ears may feel stopped up or they may be experiencing a roaring in the ears. They may feel as if hot water is running out of the ear.

Mercurius sol:
A Mercurius sol ear infection may involve boils or a discharge which may be offensive or painful and these pains may particularly make themselves known at night.

Sulphur:
A Sulphur ear infection may also involve boils or discharges and may have sharp, tearing or burning pains.

If you or your child is suffering from this terrible pain and you require further help, book an acute appointment now!

Studies on Homeopathy and Ear Infections (Acute Otitis Media)

A small study out of India showed homeopathy to be an effective treatment for acute otitis media and found the symptomatic improvement was quicker with homeopathy.

A large, international study found that homeopathic treatment for acute ear complaints was not inferior to conventional treatment and found onset of improvement significantly faster in the homeopathic group for both adults and children.

Using homeopathic eardrops in addition to standard therapy for children with acute otitis media was found to be moderately effective and a useful adjunct to standard therapy.

230 children received individualized homeopathy: pain control was achieved in 39% of patients after 6 hours, another 33% after 12 hours with a resolution rate 2.4 times faster than in placebo controls.

The Eagle has Landed!

BONUS!
A few other reasons to keep Nux vomica handy when you have children …

* Infants with a stopped up nose, preventing nursing.

* Infants with hiccups (good for children with hiccups in general, but infants in particular).

* Stomach pain in children.

* Irritability in children (especially when there has been an overindulgence of any kind — good or bad. Too much candy or not enough sleep, for example.)

* Children suffering from jealousy.

Does this mean that Nux vomica is the only way to help my child with constipation or hiccups or stomach pain, irritability or jealousy? Nope. But there is a good chance this strongly associated gastro-intestinal remedy may help them.

The Eagle has Landed: “Someone or something has arrived; something been done. The phrase was famously said by US astronaut Neil Armstrong when the Eagle Lunar Lander landed on the moon in 1969” (thefreedictionary.com).

Constipation is a trying condition. Constipation in little people is a frustrating, trying and heartbreaking condition. It’s a helpless feeling when you know what needs to happen for the child to feel better, but you have no way of actually fixing the situation. There is no magic bandaid to put on an uncomfortable little person when it comes to constipation. Waiting for that eagle or eaglet to finally land is tough.

I was ignorant to the beauties of homeopathy when my kids were little (dang!). I sure wish I had known about homeopathy in general, and Nux vomica, in particular.

Some homeopaths, through their clinical experience, have found certain potencies of certain remedies act differently than the other potencies of the same remedies. For instance, The Banerjis, of the renown Banerji Protocols with their nearly unprecedented clinical experience* have found that for constipation, Nux vomica 30c, twice daily is the ticket, especially if the sufferer is an infant or child. (The twice daily dosing is if it’s a chronic problem. If it’s an unusual but uncomfortable acute condition, relief most likely will occur very quickly.)

Nux vomica is not the Banerji’s first line protocol for constipation, but it is the simplest (Banerji and Banerji 2013). That fact, coupled with a quick look through Robin Murphy’s Repertory** using homeopathy software (Radar Opus, for those wondering), searching just for “child” and “Nux vomica,” shows us a few unique/small rubrics,*** demonstrating what a good fit Nux vomica is for constipated children.

Skipping the repertory language (often written in the old, original wording which can sometimes be confusing to the modern reader) and moving right into plain English, Nux vomica is highly indicated in:

— Constipation for infants and newborns (8 remedies listed)
— Constipation alternating with diarrhea in children (16 remedies listed)
— Colic in infants (16 remedies listed)
— Constipation in children (34 remedies listed)
— Constipation in infants (17 remedies listed)

These five rubrics are a pretty clear indication that Nux vomica may help infants and children with constipation.

As usual, homeopathy is a well-rounded medicine and Nux vomica can likely help not only an infant or child, but adults and animals, too, should the symptoms be a good fit.

If you have a child suffering from constipation, acutely or chronically, book a free introductory chat to see if homeopathy may be helpful.

Thankful for a Yeast Infection

Read Now

Picture
Who in their right mind would be thankful for a yeast infection? The person who discovered the life changing possibilities of homeopathy, that’s who!

(Too much information, I know, but this is how the story goes.)

I used to suffer these ridiculous symptoms not infrequently and after many years of not suffering from anything of the sort, I had a yeast infection that would not go away. I had the cleanest diet of my life at that time (I was eating the Paleo Autoimmune diet). I had completely removed any source of sugar (including all fruit and even balsamic vinegar!) and was basically eating meat and low carb vegetables. Still, this yeast infection would not budge. I had a prescription of Diflucan from my gynecologist, but was hesitant to take it after reading the side effects despite having used it “successfully” many times before. I knew there had to be another way through this problem.

I began searching the internet for a natural answer. That’s when I found Joette Calabrese’s article and I learned at that moment that perimenopause was a likely culprit.

I looked around for a little more information. This sounded too good to be true. None of the other "natural" yeast infection cures helped at all.

I purchased a tube of Boiron’s Mercurius solubilis 200c. Actually, I purchased a couple of tubes of Merc sol, because her article did say it may take 3-5 months to fix this problem.

I was hesitant. I don’t know why I was hesitant. I had successfully used homeopathy to fix my migraines a few years prior. Maybe the hesitancy was because this was something I was doing on my own — and not under the guidance of my MD/homeopath.

I eventually, hesitantly, took the Merc sol.

I think it was the next day that all the symptoms were gone. I kept waiting for the symptoms to return. They never did. I never needed that second tube of Merc sol. Heck, I never even needed a second dose of the Merc sol. It has now been years, and I still haven't required a second dose.

That was in the month of September of 2015. I followed Joette’s blogs for a few more months to see what she was all about. By January, I had learned all I could learn from her blogs and I then booked an appointment with her to address my other long-standing, frustrating conditions.

Within 2 weeks of following the Banerji protocols she suggested, I felt so much better that I enrolled in my first of Joette’s webinars. By April, just 4 months later, I was completely hooked on the idea of homeopathy and began investigating a formal education in this new discovery of mine. My life was now set to take a completely different track than I had ever possibly imagined. By the 1 year anniversary of this glorious yeast infection, I had devoured everything Joette had to offer and was officially enrolled in Homeopathy School International, which was at that time, the only fully accredited US on-line program available.

I didn’t set out to become a homeopath. I only wanted to learn homeopathy — to know homeopathy as a “grand hobby” as Joette once termed it. But, because to get to the next level of classes I had to take the tests, I eventually earned my certification. Once that ended, I still wanted to learn more and that’s when I happened upon CHE/Middlesex University program and I have now earned my BSc in Homeopathy. (By this time, I knew I was absolutely on the right path. I now wanted to be the homeopath I had become.) Because I still want to learn more, I am once again enrolled in HSI, this time for the Advanced Clinical Studies.

I am so immensely grateful to Joette Calabrese (and that darned yeast infection!) and all she has taught me. My life now is nothing that I had ever dreamed it would be. Helping people to feel better is an honor and a privilege and one of the most rewarding things imaginable and I am thankful daily for the wonders of this amazing medicine known as homeopathy.

A Rufus update

Picture
Rufus’ dollops had literally dropped to nothing for a while. Then there would be another and we repeated the Aloe and they would disappear again. Then, they just kept coming, regardless of what we tried. A package was waiting every morning and sometimes 1 or 2 more times during the day and evening.

A change had occurred, though, that could be helpful to finding another remedy. His stools became lienteric. From Merriam Webster: "containing or characterized by the passage of undigested or partially digested food — used of feces or diarrhea."

We were literally getting ready to walk out the door for a few days away, so I took a quick look at Murphy’s repertory which shows a couple of possible remedies that fit the idea of both his loose/easy stool as well as  lienteric stool.

I left 4 bowls of food in the fridge for the dog sitter to give him, each with China officinalis wedged into some pieces of meat.

There has not been a dollop since. Not the usual morning offering nor the evening drop off. And, I think he looks a little happier about life. He seems to be sleeping less. He comes to sit by us in the day rather than staying by himself. But, we've been here before… so, stay tuned! I am hopeful but not certain.

Cinchona officinalis (or, China officinalis, AKA China, or Peruvian Bark) — from which we get quinine is also the first homeopathic remedy to be “proved” by Samuel Hahnemann. He devised his theory of “like cures like,” then he tried it on himself. Thus he “proved” his theory. (Look for an upcoming article on this topic.)

At it’s worst, the Cinchona patient is “despondent, gloomy, has no desire to live, but lacks courage to commit suicide” (Allen 2017, p. 100). Could Rufus have been in that state? Dunno. “Gloomy” could certainly be a word attributed to his disposition recently.

Cinchona also has “drawing or tearing; in every joint” (Allen 2005, p. 100). We know he has this going on. You can see it and hear it when he stands up or drops down.

Cinchona is an excellent remedy for the elderly, the weak or the recuperating. We believe Rufus to be on the older side. (He has been with us for 5-1/2 years and the vet estimated he was 4 or 5 at that time.) Cinchona is part of the 3rd line Banerji Protocol for Malnutrition with loss of weight (Banerji and Banerji 2013, p. 131). That could fit old Rufus. His harness seems pretty loose these days despite our not altering his diet. When he first joined our family, he was only 85 pounds (and was missing a great deal of his fur, plus mange, plus fleas and yeast infections — I had forgotten how unwell he used to be!) Though the vet recommended a chicken and rice diet for him, we quickly learned that rice was not his friend and he has been grain free ever since and last we checked, he was about 130 pounds. But, there is absolutely no question that he was malnourished upon arrival here. Bone broth has been an amazing thing for this lovely beast and I credit that, along with cell salts and well chosen homeopathic remedies, for getting him back to health.

Homeopathy is definitely not an exact science and it is not at all unusual to need to zigzag your way through a case. I hope we are at the end of Rufus’ dollops, but in the event that we are not, I am prepared to follow his symptoms to make sure that his remaining years are as pleasant as possible — for him, and for us!

Just going for a Pepcid…

On a recent road trip, we encountered a man at a stop who got out of his truck and went into his camper and came out saying, “just getting a Pepcid. I ate too much for lunch."

A Pepcid may help him in the moment, but homeopathic Natrum phosphoricum will help him both in the moment as well as in the future.

One of the most beautiful aspects of homeopathy is its ability to help clear a condition. I was suffering from some indigestion issues a couple of years ago and I began using the Banerji Protocol of Nat phos 30c, twice daily (and occasionally more often if I was experiencing discomfort). Soon, I only needed it about once a week and in no time even less frequently than that. I realized the other day that I was still carrying it around in my purse though I have not required it in about a year (maybe longer, actually).

Nat phos can assist with:
• heartburn
• regurgitation of food
• pain when swallowing
• sour belching as well as a sour taste in the mouth
• toots (flatulence), especially when accompanied by sour risings
• sourness in general: sour vomiting, sour stomach, sour stools, sour burps… for big people and little people. I think back to when my kids were little and I wish I had known about Nat phos for those sour spit ups!

I didn't know the man who was going for a Pepcid, but I wish the circumstances had allowed for me to share this marvelous remedy with him.

Homeopathy to the Rescue for…

Read Now

Last year, I dropped Rufus off for boarding when we went out of town. I was informed he needed a bunch of immunizations to be there, even if only to get groomed.

Ruf does not love riding in the car and at his size, he’s not easy to get into the car when he’s not a willing participant. The groomer/boarder is close enough that I walk him there. I opted to use their mobile vet to do what they needed to do.

He was perfectly healthy when I dropped him off. He was sick as a dog when I picked him up. Kennel cough (also known as Bordatella, the vaccine he was required to get so he didn’t catch Kennel cough) was the diagnosis.

What to do? Homeopathy of course!

I turned to my handy dandy Homeopathy to the Rescue for Dogs from Pet Remedy Charts.*

“Kennel Cough: Drosera 30c if the cough is dry, spasmodic and there is retching. Dose: 3-4 times daily for 5-7 days or until improved.”

Drosera and lots of bone broth was the ticket and after a few days I was happy to hear him out in the yard with enough energy to bark at the world.

Back when we used to have chickens, I used their Homeopathy to the Rescue for Chickens. Fortunately, the chicken only had diarrhea and it was easily addressed by giving her some Arsenicum album (dissolved in some bone broth soaked rice). A few doses and everything firmed right up again. My chicken chart addresses 31 different ailments including Abscesses, Aggression, Bumblefoot, Animal Bites, Respiratory Infections/Allergies and also includes Dosing Guidelines.

These charts are concise and easy to use and nicely laminated, too so I expect them to be around for quite a while.

Since I first found this company, they have added a bunch of new charts, including anatomy and for some of the creatures they have included herbs, flower remedies and acupressure. Charts available for dogs, cats, birds, horses, chickens, pet rats and humans.

Always helpful to have a handy-dandy chart ready to go for whatever comes up.

Homeopathic Remedies to consider following a major accident

Read Now

Picture
Ladders are deceptively dangerous. A few years ago a friend fell from a 2-story ladder and suffered horrific injuries resulting in numerous surgeries and the lingering potential loss of a limb. Today I learned of another friend who fell off what was described only as a tall ladder. I’m told he broke 3 ribs, his nose and his arm and required some stitches in his face and was knocked unconscious. I can’t even imagine the pain he is enduring.

Without further information of what sorts of interventions he has been given, here is what I would suggest, homeopathically speaking, to help find some relief after such a major accident.

When something like this happens, you have to address the most serious aspects first and in this case that would be the injury to the head.

He has apparently not suffered any brain damage, thank goodness. With a knock to the head like that though, I would start things off with a dose of homeopathic Arnica montana in as high a potency as you have available. Arnica is the first homeopathic remedy to think of after an accident in general and more specifically following an injury to the head. Arnica is one of 2 highly indicated remedies for head injuries. (Nat sulph is the other remedy to consider in this scenario.) Arnica is reputed to help with shock: Traumatic shock, shock from blood loss, shock from fractures, surgical shock and even mental shock. Arnica is also known to help with all these types of pains in general, including the pain from all the broken bones as well as the inevitable bruising* that will follow.

Broken ribs. 3 of them! Homeopathic Bryonia alba is known as the “grumpy bear” remedy. A Bryonia pain is virtually always aggravated by motion (Morrison 1993). When it hurts to move. When it hurts to breathe. When it hurts to even move your eyes. When you hurt that much, you’re gonna’ be grumpy. Bryonia is also an excellent remedy for the pain from broken bones, which, of course, hurt when you move them.

For the stitches, homeopathic Calendula would be where I would start. Calendula is amazingly soothing in addition to its ability to help heal wounds*. Calendula can be taken both internally as well as used topically (by dissolving some pellets in water and then soaking cloths or bandages in the solution and applying them to the area).

*For research showing the benefits of Calendula and wound healing and Arnica for bruising,  check out my research page.

His loved ones are suffering right along with him. Ignatia amara may help to address the worry and the fear they are enduring. Aconite might be in order if they witnessed the fall, to help with that shock, especially if the image keeps re-playing in their mind.

How often to take the remedies following an injury varies and is dependent on the severity of the injury and the resulting pain. Let this pain be your guide. The worse the pain, the more frequent the administration of the remedies. With the remedies suggested above, I would do the following:

Arnica: Immediately following the injury and repeat as necessary until the person is calm. Following that, begin alternating Arnica and Bryonia every hour until the pain is significantly lessened. (Note: this may need to be more frequent at the start.)

Calendula 30, twice daily. Re-apply the topical Calendula dressings as they begin to dry out until no longer needed for pain and the risk of infection has passed.

After the initial few doses, wait for the pain to return before taking another dose. Do not take the remedies if there is no pain. If the pain returns, that is the time to take the remedy.

Support remedies to be considered:
Calcium phosphorica 6x (Calc-phos) and Calcium Fluoride 12x (Calc-fluor) are tissue salts (cell salts) which can be taken daily, or even
twice daily, for bone support.

For the loved ones:
Aconite immediately and repeat until they are calm and that initial shock has subsided.
Ignatia, twice daily until the stressful situation has stabilized.

Be mindful of deceptively dangerous contraptions!
