On the 4th day of cell salts… Ferr phos

On the 4th day of cell salts… Ferrum phosphoricum.

Ferr phos is what Dr. Schüssler called the “true form of iron phosphate that occurs naturally in the human system” (McCabe 2009). "It is the cell salt most concerned with blood because it is part of hemoglobin, the substance that takes up oxygen from the inhaled air and carries it through the bloodstream to all parts of the body. Because of Ferr phos’s important role in carrying oxygen, it is recommended in nearly all conditions" (Weintraub 1999).

Ferr phos is considered an important remedy for acute conditions, especially fever and inflammations. When taken at the first sign of illness, it all might be nipped in the bud!

Conditions which may benefit from Ferr phos:
  • Anemia
  • Hemorrhages
    • nose bleeds
  • Circulatory disorders
  • Neuralgic pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Ear infections
    • especially in children
    • with burning or throbbing pain
  • Eyes
    • burning or sore
    • sensation of sand under eyelid
  • Fevers
  • Gastro-intestinal
    • diarrhea with watery stools
    • hemorrhoids
  • Headaches
  • Injuries
  • Musculo-skeletal
    • arthritis
    • sciatica
    • sprains
  • Respiratory system
    • colds
    • coughs
    • croup
    • flu
    • laryngitis
      • from sickness or after heavy use
    • sore throat
      • red and inflamed
    • whooping cough
      • with vomiting
  • Cystitis

Mentally and emotionally, Ferr phos may be helpful for those who just want to be taken care of. They may seem indifferent to their illness.

On the first day of cell salts: Calc fluor

Read Now

Picture
On the 1st day of cell salts, Dr. Schüssler gave to us… Calcarea Fluorica.

Today begins a quick blast through the twelve cell salts — just quick key notes for each one.

Somewhere between a homeopathic remedy and a nutritional supplement, cells salts, tissue salts, Schüssler salts or Schüssler biochemical cell salts … whatever you want to call them… are a very gentle way to support your body. They can be used individually or in combination, (on their own or in conjunction with homeopathic remedies), to address all sorts of physical ailments. “When your body lacks these important cell salts, you are more vulnerable to common health concerns. By replenishing them, your body is better prepared to treat illnesses and enjoy better overall wellness” (Hyland's 2024),

For this series, I will go in alphabetical order (which also correlates to Hyland’s* numbering system).

Calc fluor, also known as Calcium Fluoride, is found in nature as the mineral fluorspar or fluorite, but in the body it is combined with Calcium. The surface of bones and tooth enamel contain Calc fluoride and it can also be found in the walls of blood vessels, muscles and connective tissues.

Calc fluor is for tissues that are too lax OR too stiff -- the elasticity cell salt. "It is an excellent remedy for long-lasting complaints of a chronic nature, especially those, like lumbago and joint pain -- especially hip pain -- that are seemingly without cause" (McCabe 2009).

Calc fluor strengthens bones, veins, ligaments, skin and teeth enamel.

How do you know you may benefit from Calc fluor?

  • Hemorrhoids
  • Varicose or enlarged veins
  • Swollen glands
  • Teeth/Mouth:
    • which are loose in their sockets — with or without pain
    • delayed dentition
    • problems with the enamel of teeth
    • toothache with pain when any food touches the tooth
    • cold sores
  • Musculo-skeletal:
    • Bone disease and bone pain
    • Problems with tendons or ligaments
      • repeated sprains
    • Bone spurs
    • Bursitis
    • Joint pain or cracking in the joints
    • Bruised bones
  • Hardening (induration) of tissues
    • especially breasts and glands
    • Ganglion cysts
  • Prolapses
  • Throat tickle
  • Cataracts
  • Head colds
    • with lots of thick, green or yellow lumpy nasal discharge
    • feels like you want to sneeze but it just isn’t happening
    • post-nasal drip
  • Cracks
    • on the tongue — with or without pain
    • chaps and cracks in the skin, especially the hands and toes
    • anal fissures
  • Copious urine with frequent urging

Mentally and emotionally Calc fluor is not well indicated but may be useful in sadness or when you feel you can’t think straight. "A sense of free-form anxiety with a sense of indecision" (McCabe 2009).

Calc fluor is often recommended in the 12x potency (though 3x or 6x may be sufficient).

Cell Salts, an overview

Read Now

Picture
This is an image from an internet search which appears to be from Hyland's.
I just realized that I have mentioned individual cell salts many, many times previously but I’ve never covered these marvelous little goodies as a whole.

Let’s talk about cell salts!

Cell salts, also known as tissue salts, Schüssler salts or Schüssler biochemical cell salts, are a very gentle way to support your body

Cell salts lie somewhere between a homeopathic remedy and a nutritional supplement — “in a limbo between material medicine (that which is used in allopathic treatments) and energy medicine (that which is common to such treatments as homeopathic medicine and acupuncture, among other therapies) (McCabe 2009). “Micro dosed prepared minerals which support the healing processes in the body by regulating mineral levels in the cells” (Schuesslertissuesalts.com.au 2023).

German physician Dr. Willhelm Heinrich Schüssler discovered that when body tissue is reduced to ashes, what remains are the tissue salts. “He looked at that ash and at its component parts, searching among them to identify the building blocks, the chemical compounds that give the structure and function to the human body. … It was important to Schuessler* that these substances be ‘native’ to the human system because of his belief in the concept of deficiency. Since he believed that the health of the body as a whole was determined by the health of each individual cell of the body, it was of great importance to him that each of those cells had all the nutrients it required to form, grow and function” (McCabe 2009). Because all these substances are naturally present in the human body, “each of the twelve remedies is totally benign. Schuessler’s treatments are nourishing to your system and to your health. They bring balance to our bodies; a balance of nutrition, form, and function that can lead to a state of total health” (McCabe 2009). Dr. Schüssler did his thing back in the late 1800s and since that time, many more “tissue salts” have been added to the original list, though the biochemic system remains with only the original 12 salts.

McCabe goes on to state that the cell salts “represent a simplification of homeopathy, they are well within the easy grasp of every person who is seeking a means by which they can encourage good health.”

Cell salts can be used individually or in combination (on their own, or, in conjunction with homeopathic remedies or even with allopathic medicine) to address all sorts of physical ailments. “When your body lacks these important cell salts, you are more vulnerable to common health concerns. By replenishing them, your body is better prepared to treat illnesses and enjoy better overall wellness” (Hyland’s 2024).

“A disturbance of the molecular motion of one of the inorganic materials in a tissue causes a sickness, for the cure of which it suffices that a minimal dose of the same inorganic substance be furnished, since the molecules of the material thus used as a remedy fill the breach in the chain of molecules of the cell-salts or tissue-salts under consideration.” —W.H. Schuessler (McCabe 2009).

Cell salts are limited in their potency to 12x ensuring each remedy still has its nutrient substance. (For further information, see X? C? Homeopathic potency briefly explained.) Avogadro's number is a point of dilution where nothing of the original substance remains and that level of dilution is 23x or 12c. (That’s right! Most homeopathic remedies have “nothing” in them — nothing that our current instruments can see. Since cell salts are all 12x and below, something of the original substance remains in each remedy.)

All of the cell salts are “compound remedies” meaning they are made from more than one substance before they are made into their homeopathic form. Author Vinton McCabe does a nice job explaining the importance behind this. “The easiest way… to think about the cell salt remedies is as if they were the children of specific marriages between parents. Each remedy will share some aspects with each of its parent remedies. Natrum Muriaticum will have some of the attributes common to the Natrums and some attributes that it gets from the Muriaticum side of the family. In the same way, each of the compounds will ‘inherit’ a mix of traits, divided between the two parent remedies.” (The below family information all comes from McCabe’s The Healing Echo: Discovering Homeopathic Cell Salt Remedies.)

  • The Calcium/Calcarea Family = relate to the idea of structure

  • The Chloride/Muriaticum/Muriatica family = on a physical level… tends to have swelling, physical enlargement of organs, and/or bloating

  • The Fluoride/Fluorica/Fluorata/Fluoratum Family = conditions of the teeth and bones and joints as well as conditions in which the elastic tissues of the body become stretched and lax

  • The Iron/Ferrum Family = relating to blood

  • The Magnesium/Magnesia Family = sensitive/allergic; pains shift from place to place

  • The Phosphorus/Phosphoricum/Phosphorica Family = bleeding; burning pains; suddenness

  • The Potassium/Kali Family = chronic illnesses of all sorts (rheumatism, arthritis, headaches, PMS); muscle twitching and muscle weakness

  • The Sodium/Natrum Family = because sodium causes retention, Natrum types can be chronically bloated and will always feel better after any discharge

  • The Sulfur/Sulphurica/Sulphuricum Family = tendency toward sweat, toward itch and toward functional disorders

  • Silicea/Silica (the only cell salt that is taken from a single source and not from a chemical compound) = a building block, giving strength and stability to all things that contain it

Each of the individual 12 salts correspond to specific bodily functions. A very brief overview follows with information taken from various sources:
  1. Calc fluor = the elasticity cell salt; strengthens bones and teeth enamel
  2. Calc phos = builder of bone tissue and structure; builds cells
  3. Calc sulph = blood purifier and healer; infections; skin conditions
  4. Ferrum phos = fevers and inflammations; acute conditions
  5. Kali mur = second stage of illness; congestion
  6. Kali phos = nervous system; fatigue
  7. Kali sulph = skin issues; infections
  8. Mag phos = pain: cramping pains/radiating pain/ neuralgic pain
  9. Nat mur = fluid distribution; headaches
  10. Nat phos = acid balancing; indigestion
  11. Nat sulph = liver stimulation; eliminates fluids
  12. Silicea = connective tissues; hair & nails

How do our cells become depleted of these tissue salts?
The usual culprits which deplete us: sickness, whether bacterial or viral; injury; stress; poor diet. Cell salts are excellent for growing children as well as for the elderly.

How to take Schüssler cell salts?
Every author offers a variation on a theme, but what they all hold in common is repetition. (For this list I have referred to Skye Weintraub’s Natural Healing with Cell Salts” — which is a very nice and easy book to use!)
  • Adults: 3-4 tablets, 3-4 times a day
  • Children: 2 tablets, 3-4 times a day
  • Infants: 1 tablet dissolved in warm water three times a day and sipped. Or, the liquid can be placed in the belly button three times a day; hold in area for about 5 minutes
Chronic cases:
  • 3-4 times a day. The remedy or remedies may have to be taken for a month or longer
Acute cases of sudden onset:
  • take one dose 1-2 hours apart and decrease frequency as symptoms improve
Acute, severe or painful cases:
  • dose every 15 minutes to an hour and decrease frequency as symptoms improve
Less acute cases:
  • give the remedy hourly, and decrease the frequency as symptoms improve

To apply topically:
  • dissolve 2-3 tablets of each indicated remedy in a tablespoon of hot water. After they have completely dissolved, dip a cotton swab in the liquid and dab it on the affected place.
    • Apply the cell salts in powdered form to areas needed for first-aid conditions, such as cuts and wounds. Follow external applications with the internal treatment of cell salts.

Why not mix all of them together?
You can do this. The 12 cell salts combined are most frequently found in the US under the name Bioplasma** by Hyland’s.

I have found this combination to be excellent at the start and then, not so much. I have heard it referred to as a “picker-upper” and in the beginning of taking it, it seems to be just that. It replenishes what is missing and then the benefits don’t actually wear off, per se, they just aren’t as useful in the full complement. If you have tried this and then found it to be not quite so helpful after a while, it is a good indication that it is time to fine tune your cell salts and by doing so, I am sure great benefit will be found.

Sometimes one single cell salt is all you need. However, they work beautifully in combination with each other. For example, let's look at the first few entries in Weintraub's Eye section:
  • ache of eyeballs: Calc fluor and Calc phos
  • affections, with flow of tears: Nat mur
  • bloodshot: Nat mur, Ferr phos, Nat phos
  • burning sensation in: Ferr phos
You see, sometimes just a single cell salt and for others, a combination of two or three is what is needed.

Another readily available combination is known as Biochemical Phosphates. This is a combination of 5 phosphates to help address stress and overload. It’s a beautiful thing! My old contaner from Hyland’s says it’s for: Nervousness, Irritability and Occasional Sleeplessness. (Note: It appears Hyland’s has renamed this product to “Nerve Tonic.”)

These little cell salt beauties are powerful healers. There are even practitioners who treat their clients with nothing other than cell salts. Pick up a cell salt book and get started — I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. (As mentioned above, I really like Weintraub's Natural Healing with Cell Salts  and Lisa Strbac's newly published Schüssler's Tissue Salts Rediscovered: The 21st Century Guide to Self-Healing is great, too!)

“The greatest triumph of a science is when it becomes the common property of the people and thus contributes to the common wealth.” — motto inscribed in The Homeopathic Domestic Physician
Let’s face it… learning to use homeopathy can be a little overwhelming and daunting. Even once you are an official homeopath, it can still feel overwhelming… especially when you are under the weather like I am today.

It’s hard to think through your symptoms when you’re not feeling your best. It’s times like this it’s very helpful to have a couple homeopath friends, both human and technological!!

Back to learning to use homeopathy…

I have mentioned some books in the past to get you started, and, now, let’s take a look at some software that might be helpful. (I have used Homeopathic Housecall many times but most of the rest of these apps are new to me, unless otherwise noted.)

Homeopathic Housecall has been around for a number of years. Based on Constantine Hering’s The Homeopathic Domestic Physician from 1835, Homeopathic Housecall brings this classic book into the modern world through an internet-based app.

The interface is pretty easy to navigate. You begin each case by searching by Complaints, Locations or Stressors. From there, the program leads you through a series of questions to help you find an appropriate homeopathic remedy. At the end of that, they give you a few remedies (and some basic information for each) for you to parse through to see what looks like the best fit.

Homeopathic Housecall is a subscription based service beginning at $65 per year for a 2-year annual subscription or $11.99 per month. They also offer a 7-day free trial.

I was pleasantly surprised at the surprisingly large number of mobile apps on the iPhone if you search “Homeopathy” in the app store. (If they mention the app being available for Android, I have included that information.) I played around with a few of them so you don’t have to.

Homeopathic Helper is an app for Apple and Android phones ($14.99 at the time of this writing). The app includes a free book which is a nice little introduction to homeopathy with some sample cases and dosage instructions.

Once you have registered an account, you can choose “conditions” or “remedies.” A few of the choices: allergic reactions, bladder infections, earache, impetigo, sciatica, shingles. Each condition has a brief overview followed by a handful of remedies which may be useful.
  • I found the selection of remedies provided for each condition I looked at to be helpful and clear.

Healio Homeopathy is available through Apple and I must confess, I’m a little confused by their pricing, but they appear to offer monthly and annual subscription plans.

For this trial run, I searched for “post-nasal catarrh” and what comes up is a long list of remedies with color coded buttons on the side of “low,” “medium,” and “high” to help you wade through them. Once you click on one of the listed remedies you then get more information on the remedy. The information provided comes from Kent and there is a lot of it. (Note: I did not purchase a subscription and it appears you just have to sit through a momentary ad to get to your information. It looks like you can have the “analysis” feature if you subscribe.)
  • I found this app not quite as easy to use as some of the others but it provides a lot of information.

Boiron’s Medicine Finder appears to be free and when I searched “postnasal drip” only 1 remedy popped up. Of the few conditions I scrolled through, only 1 or 2 remedies ever popped up. There is a “shop” button that takes you to the Boiron website to purchase remedies. They have an electronic version of their “Easy Guide” and a button for their new products. It does, however have a handy dandy video for how to open a Boiron tube, something I found incredibly frustrating when I first used one (click here to read about my first time trying to get into the blasted tube!) Additionally, there is a link to the internet to watch Boiron videos on various remedies.
  • I found this app very basic and not terribly helpful and it froze up on me a number of times.

Biochemic Tissue Salts appears to be free and has a pretty in-depth overview of each of the 12 cell salts: what the substance is, preparation, physicochemical data, what a deficiency of the substance can cause, normal function in the body, general indications and then a nice, long list of symptoms and “particular indications.”
  • This app lives on my phone and I have found it to be a great resource for cell salts. Though there is a lot of information to sift through.

Homeopathy for Everyone also appears to be free and is a little different than the previous listings in that they provide some combination remedy suggestions as well as potency and dosing guidance. Note: A number of the suggested remedies are unusual remedies. When you click on “whiplash” for example, it lists a remedy combo, suggests taking it 3 times a day for a maximum of a week and that’s that. It appears to be just that for every condition clicked.
  • This app is interesting in that it provides combos and some out of the norm remedies.

Homeopathy Clinical Tips asks you to register, but it appears you can use it without doing so. This app isn’t as user friendly as some of the others but they do offer some potency and dosing suggestions. This app offers many little pictures of information under “Useful Tips.” For instance, "Examination Fear" says “Argentum nitricum 200c offers instant relief” and names the author of the suggestion, in this case, Dr. Foubister. Under “Clinical Tips” it shows three remedies for “Abscess” and  provides some more specifics when you click on it. It also offers potency and dosing and again lists the contributing authors.
  • This is kind of a fun little app to play around with but not as helpful as some of the others for new homeopathy users.

Homeopathy Materia Medica is an app that lives on my phone and I do refer to it fairly often and I believe it is free. This is a straightforward materia medica. Choose a letter, find your remedy and read up on it. It has a button where you can add your own notes. I have never used this feature but it also has videos of well known homeopaths discussing remedies. It is not a complete materia medica, but that would be asking a lot.
  • This app is much more than adequate for a quick understanding of common remedies.

MyHomeopath allows you to use a reduced version of the app for free, or, you can choose to subscribe for a low annual fee. The free version only offers “general,” “fever” and “head.” To use this app, choose your condition and then on the right hand side of the screen it has a check list where you can click the symptoms you are experiencing. Once you make your selections and click “remedies,” it provides a ranked choice of possible remedies. It also provides instructions for making a water dose.
  • At least in the free version, it doesn’t appear to provide much information on the suggested remedies. You would need to refer elsewhere for that.

Bach Flower Remedies is another app that lives on my phone… providing a nice overview of each of the Bach Flower Essences. It also offers the “Quick Prescriber” where you can search by symptom. Click your symptom and the app provides the one or two essences appropriate for each symptom.
  • A good way to get to know the Bach Flowers.

Lotus Smart Charts is a neat little app from Robin Murphy and Judith Toscano. Choose from Kids and Babies, First Aid, Furry Friends and Digestion. Once you choose your main category, you then choose the issue. For example, under First Aid, you can choose: Bleeding, Black Eye, Puncture wounds, etc. and when you click on your issue a couple of remedies pop up with a few differentiating features.
  • This app has a nice interface and with the information coming from Drs Murphy and Toscano, you know the remedies suggested are pretty good places to start.

Homeopathic Prescriber teaches how to take a case as well as an A-Z of symptoms. I was randomly clicking around and stumbled on the entry for “screaming children” with further differentiation of symptoms, like: night screaming; piteous crying; before urine passes — followed by the suggested remedy. They have a button for Video News which says the videos will change periodically. Today it showed only one video for Homeopathy for Depression and Anxiety.
  • There is something intriguing about this app. I think I’ll be playing around with this one a little bit more.

There you have my 2 cents on a handful of available homeopathy technology. As I mentioned earlier, there are a lot of apps out there and I just took a quick look at a few that were not prohibitively expensive. (I understand there are actually a few apps that are essentially complete repertories but I have not tried any of those.)

As for my current cold? My friend used Homeopathic Housecall, walked me through the questions and came up with a remedy that definitely brought me to a better place. I am now able to function. My appetite has returned. My headache has significantly lessened and my burning throat has dissipated. I was able to enjoy being with my family tonight as well as to get a little work done, and, most importantly, I am now ready for bed and I am looking forward to a good night’s sleep with her suggested remedy in a glass of water sitting next to my bedside in case I wake in the night.

Remember, this is the year to dig into homeopathy! Let technology be your friend on your learning journey.

It's Never Too Late, 4: Arthritis

Read Now

Picture
“Homeopathic treatment is always worthwhile, even in individuals who are seriously ill and in need of care where there is no hope of complete recovery of health” (Teut and Doppler 2019).
This topic is near and dear to me… Arthritis (this article focuses on osteoarthritis). Every time I have had an x-ray done over the last 10 or so years, they came back and said there is arthritis in there. Why would I have so many xrays? Cuz I had pain, that’s why. I have x-ray evidence of arthritis in my hands, (fingers and wrists), feet, ankles, knees and following an injury as a teenager, I was told the left side of my jaw was “bone on bone.” I’m pretty sure that were I to have further imaging on my hips and low back and neck that arthritis would be seen in those places, too.

Now, I would like to point out that in that last paragraph I used the past tense. Since using homeopathy to address my arthritis, my pain levels have absolutely plummeted. It’s a rare day when my hands ache. I walk about 3 miles a day and while I do sometimes have some stiffness afterward, it is short-lived and soon forgotten. I’m not going to say all my joints are in perfect working order, but compared to where I was (and, definitely as compared to where I was headed), I have very few complaints at the age of 55. I had way more pain and discomfort 10-20 years ago.

(I credit homeopathy for the bulk of my relief, but in addition to exercising regularly, I also eat a good, healthy whole foods diet, including plenty of bone broth and I also credit rolfing, too.)

Once we hit age 65, nearly half (47.4%) of Americans have been diagnosed by a doctor as having arthritis (Brooks et al. 2018). If we want to add in people who have not bothered to get an official diagnosis, I’m willing to bet that number is considerably higher. Dr. Andrew Lockie (1993) estimates that 90% of people over the age of 40 have some degree of osteoarthritis in one or more joints.

Along with the physical discomfort, osteoarthritis and all its limitations can lead to depression and sleep disturbances (Brooks et al. 2018). Additionally, anxiety and depression can lower your pain threshold and then the chronic pain aggravates the anxiety and depression — resulting in a vicious circle. See? It’s a good thing to try and get a handle on as soon as possible!

What exactly is arthritis and who gets it?
“Arthritis”  is painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints. (Joints, as a reminder, are places where two bones meet.) Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease. Degeneration is structural or functional breakdown. Common symptoms include pain, redness, heat and swelling. The most commonly affected joints are: hands, knees, hips, neck and lower back. In addition to the breakdown, small bone growths (osteophytes or bone spurs see also: The Importance of a Proper Diagnosis) may grow on the edges of the joint. Or, a bit can break off and float inside the joint space. (I had this as a kid when I chipped my patella). Did I mention that I have had more than my fair share of injuries? I was a busy kid, playing hard and getting hurt! The receptionist at the orthopedist’s office once said to me, “you really do love us, don’t you?”

Anyone can get it, though generally speaking, it’s not a problem until we age — especially women when it develops after menopause. Though young people can get it as a result of an injury or a genetic defect.

Why is osteoarthritis so common? Joint injury, obesity, genetics and anatomical factors affect joint mechanics (Shane Anderson and Loeser 2010). But, wear and tear takes its toll and “age remains the single greatest risk factor for the development of OA in susceptible joints.”

So, how can homeopathy help arthritis?

It’s very important to remember that conventional medicine doesn’t have a lot to offer in terms of helping osteoarthritis. The first line treatments are pain relievers, according to Mayo Clinic: Tylenol, Advil and Duloxetine (Cymbalta). (I highly recommend looking into the side effects of any medicines you plan on putting in your body. Drugs.com is a quick way to do this.) Other therapies which may be helpful include: physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around the joint; occupational therapy, and Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS*) — low-voltage current to relieve pain. Beyond these, then we’re looking at more serious interventions, including cortisone injections and surgery to replace damaged joints.

Homeopathy is not the absolute answer to every problem (though I think it's pretty close!) What homeopathy can do is to assist your body to wellness. When I began using homeopathy to treat my arthritis, as much as I was wanting an overnight success, that’s not how it works. The first few remedies I used went a long way at relieving my immediate discomfort, taking the edge off, so to speak. There is a lot to undo after a lifetime of wear and tear. It wasn't until I got into some deeper remedies that the daily pain disappeared.

Let’s start with some support remedies: cell salts, (also known as tissue salts/remedies or biochemical medicine or Schüssler’s tissue salts). Cell salts are derived from substances that are naturally present in the human body, intended to nourish and balance our bodies; they are our building blocks. Dr. Schüssler “worked by the theory of deficiency. The idea of deficiency is that, if we can ascertain exactly which mineral salt or salt the body’s cells are starving for, and if we can give the body those salts in a manner in which it can absorb and digest them, then the cells will be nourished and the balance needed for function, form and good health will result.” “The cell salts are, therefore, a strange balance between allopathy and homeopathy, or, better put, a balance between homeopathy and nutritional medicine.” (McCabe 2009).

Dr. Carey (1894) recommends three cell salts** for arthritis:

Ferrum phos for an acute attack with very painful joints which are worse on movement. Tenalgia crepitans, (inflammation of a tendon sheath in which movement of the tendon is accompanied by a cracking sound).

Natrum phos “is indicated in all cases of rheumatism of the joints.”

Natrum sulph should be given alternately with Ferr phos in acute cases, but in chronic cases, Nat sulph alone may be helpful; especially in joints of the fingers.

Other cell salts which may be helpful:
Kali mur: in acute arthritis may be alternated with Ferr phos. Movement makes the pains worse; tenalgia crepitans.

Natrum mur: for chronic arthritis; the joints crack; synovitis; rheumatic arthritis, especially of finger joints; hot, painful swellings of the knee joint.

Mag phos is useful for the (violent) pains; excruciating pains which are spasmodic in character.

Kali sulph: for pains which shift from one joint to another and are worse by heat. Shifting and wandering rheumatic pains in the joints.

Calc phos for bone health, in general.

Calc fluor for enlargements of the finger joints.

Cell salts are generally given in a 6x potency and they can be combined in the mouth at one time as one dose and taken twice daily.

(Martin & Pleasance*** makes a Comb M for rheumatism with equal parts Calc phos, Kali mur, Nat phos and Nat sulph.)

On to homeopathy itself.

For dealing with the acute pain of arthritis, a quick go-to remedy is T-Relief*** or T-Relief Arthritis***, both are available in either a cream or a tablet. Medinatura*** also makes/sells BHI Arthritis Pain Relief***. All three of these combos are made of slightly different remedies.

The individual remedies which are shared between these combinations are worth investigating.

Arnica for soreness all over the body. Worse for touch, pressure, cold or cold, damp weather. Worse for motion.

Bryonia for excruciating, often stitching pains. Worse for the slightest motion (they just want to be still) and heat. Even though they are worse for moving, they feel restless. Better for pressure and warmth on the painful part, lying still, especially lying on the painful side. Joints may be hot and swollen. May seem irritable.

Dulcamera is worse especially in damp weather, and cold damp autumn and the change of weather in general. Better for motion and warmth.

Ledum may have some swelling and coldness in the affected joint. Worse for heat or becoming over-heated and motion. Though they may be chilly, they feel better for cold applications or cold bathing. Pain in the small joints, especially the toes and joint pains seem to progress up the body. Ledum is particularly good for the feet and lower legs. The soles of the feet may be painful. Ledum can also be helpful for the after-effects of steroid injections.

Rhus tox (see also: Rhymes with Box) is a good remedy for all forms of rheumatism. Worse in the morning on waking, cold, sitting still (resting) and when first moving. Better after getting up and going, continued motion and hot baths or showers. They may be restless and feel better if they keep moving.

All of these remedies listed are primarily to address the acute pain of osteoarthritis. Alan Schmukler (2006) mentions that Bryonia or Rhus tox will bring relief in a majority of cases.

This is just a small sampling of the most common (and readily available) remedies which may help arthritis pain. I could keep writing on homeopathic arthritis remedies for hours! There's a lot to say and a lot of individual remedies which may be further tailored to specific arthritic symptoms.

I highly recommend working with a professional homeopath to try and get to the root of the issue. In the meantime, try one of these above listed remedies and see if you can get a little relief.

Life is just way too short to be in constant pain and discomfort. Try some homeopathy and see if you can get back to doing things you love.

* I have and am very pleased with ireliev’s wireless TENS unit (though, I must say, I really don’t use it very often any more). Again, I have no affiliation with this company, I just like their product.

** It is possible to purchase a mixture of all 12 cell salts. However, I have found better results when choosing just the best indicated cell salts rather than using the full complement.

I just saw a CHE (Centre for Homeopathic Education) post on a remedy combination that most people could probably use at some point in their lives. If you have children, I practically guarantee they could benefit from this one.

Seeing this CHE post, “Tissue Salts for Strong Teeth,” reminded me that a few dentist appointments ago, I was told I had some staining (I think that was the term they used) and the beginnings of cavity. I could feel nothing. I could see nothing. I only had the dentist’s word for it. They recommended some chemical-based toothpaste. That’s not my thing.

What is my thing? Homeopathy, of course!

I went home and I immediately started taking the following cell salt combination remedy, twice daily. (This remedy can sometimes be purchased together, or, if you can't find that, put a pellet of each into your mouth at the same time.)

Calc fluor 12x to help strengthen tooth enamel.
Calc phos 6x to help strengthen and repair teeth.
Silica 6x for the health and strength of teeth.

What happened?

Well, when I went back 6 months later for my next cleaning they didn’t mention it so I asked about it. I was told they saw no signs of anything that had been there previously. Whoo hoo!

To test this combination further, shortly after my experience, my teenage son was told he had a cavity behind one of his brackets for his braces. He, too, then began taking the Calc Calc Sil combination. I’m not certain he was as diligent as I was about taking it, but, when the day came, he told me they had a hard time finding it. Turns out it was there, but considerably smaller. He then said to me, “I think your stuff worked.” That’s huge coming from a teenager! He was impressed enough with my “stuff” that he has decided on his own to continue taking this cell salt combination for the duration of his orthodontic treatment.

It’s important to remember that my dental issue was caught in the very early stages and I have no experience with this combination for more advanced dental issues.

Cell salts are a good reason to smile on!

Hayfever

Picture
It doesn’t look like a scary place, does it? But it is! This beautiful blue sky, well, what was under that beautiful blue sky, filled my head with some dastardly little things that gave me a stonking headache and made it difficult to breathe and sleep. I was up many times in the night blowing my nose. The light frost in the morning didn’t do anything to make those bad things go away the next night, either!

I guess it’s that time of year… Hayfever season.

All my life, everybody around me has suffered miserably from hayfever. It’s a new thing for me and I don’t find the number of tissues I have been blasting my way through very amusing. I have a new-found sympathy for all allergy sufferers, I can tell you that!

I felt better on the drive home with the windows up and the A/C on, but it all returned again once I unpacked the truck.

I had a shower to get those nasty little allergens off of me and I also had a chewable tablet that I am now going to keep a little closer to me until a good, hard frost comes in.

“Combination H”: Schuessler Tissue Salts Hayfever combination.* (This page also has a nice FAQ list about tissue/cell salts.)

Uh-huh, that’s what I’m talking about! Headache gone. I slept all night without having to blow my nose. Good stuff!

Made in Australia by Martin & Pleasance*, they have a whole range of combination tissue salts, (or cell salts, if you prefer) for a couple of dozen common conditions.

The tablets are handy, that’s for sure. But, if you don’t have this combo remedy easily at hand, you can have a dose each of Mag phos, Nat Mur and Silicea (all 6x potency) and achieve the same blessedly wonderful effect.

Summer Fun #4: Sprains, Strains & Bicycle Falls

Read Now

Picture
I didn't get to all of these injuries, but I address quite a few of them in this article.
Picture
Summer athletes, take heed! ER visits shoot up in the warmer months as the weekend warriors take on the bats, balls and trails.

SPRAINS
This one hits home right now as my husband is in week 3 of his nasty sprain. Click here for an 18-second visual of what’s involved in an ankle sprain. (For the record, he wasn’t being a weekend warrior, it was just unfortunate happenstance.)

We were hours from medical care, his ankle was huge and looked very wrong. I gave him Arnica 1m immediately, to great effect. Ice. Rest. Elevation. More Arnica as needed. The ER took X-rays and sent him on his way with 2 Ace bandages and told him to take ibuprofen* for the pain. That was helpful. Not. The next day we were able to see a proper orthopedist who took more X-rays and this time sent him on his way with a walking/air boot and the same instructions for pain. He never resorted to the over-the-counter painkillers, I am happy to say.

What to do after that? Well, some people say the X-rays can be a problem. If you’re worried about that, Nat Mur 6x, (twice daily the day of the X-ray and a few days following) is said to help.

Back to sprained ankles…

The number one remedy to turn to for any accident or injury is Arnica. Give it early and repeat as needed. As a general rule of thumb, the worse the injury, the higher the potency and then back off the repetition and lower the potency as the pain dictates.

The next remedy to consider is Aconite to help reduce the shock which often follows a bad injury. Remember! Aconite rhymes with fright. Any situation that has been a shock to your system can benefit from Aconite. And, in this case, it can benefit not only the person who had the accident, but the person who witnessed the accident.

The traditional, much accepted treatment for injuries is RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Some injuries respond to cold, some respond to heat. Ice restricts blood flow and blood flow is what you need to heal your parts. But, that blood flow is also what can cause all the swelling. I am not a physician but I have certainly had more than my fair share of injuries in my lifetime. Some of my injuries felt better with rest and elevation and ice and some felt better getting moving right away. To my mind, your pain (in addition to the input from your physician) needs to be your guide as to what is right for you.

What else can help? Here are a few homeopathic suggestions and their symptoms which may help you choose the best homeopathic remedy for your injury.

Arnica: Start here. “It is safe to say that 98% of patients who have suffered traumatic injury, however caused, need a dose of Arnica to begin their recovery” (Thomas 2000). See below for some research on Arnica.

A typical Arnica patient does not want anyone to touch their injured area. Sore, they may feel “beaten up” with swelling, bruising and inflammation. Topical Arnica is an option if the skin is intact. Do NOT apply Arnica to open wounds.

Rhus tox: for an injury that feels better for heat and continued motion. Worse on first moving. Better suited to simple sprains.

Ruta: for an injury that is worse for motion and worse for cold application. Bruised, crushed, weak feeling. A remedy for tendons and ligaments, similar to Rhus in its pain. May feel hot to touch. Follows Arnica well to help aid in recovery.

Bellis perennis: Think of this remedy if Arnica is not helping as much as you think it should be helping. Bruised pain. Like Rhus tox, a Bellis pain hurts when starting to move but gets better as you keep moving the injured area and is better from heat. A Bellis pain, though, may have the sensation of a band squeezing the injured joint. “Complicated sprains involving tendons, ligaments and soft tissue with swelling, edema and pain” (Ratera 2016).

Bryonia: worse for the slightest movement of any kind. Better for rest and immobility. This person might be a little grumpy as a result of their injury.

Ledum: when the injured area feels better from cold applications. Ankle feels dislocated and is worse by walking, to the point of being intolerable. The skin may be cold to the touch.

Symphytum for tears at the point of tendon insertion into the bone (Ratera 2016). This remedy has been known to speed along recovery. CAUTION: do NOT use Symphytum until you are certain there is no break or fracture.

Cell Salts which may be of help for sprains (Weintraub 1999):
  • Ferr phos: first aid remedy
  • Mag phos: pain which accompanies sprains
  • Nat sulph: after effects of shock
  • Ferr phos, Kali mur: swelling
for tendons and ligaments: Make a compress from these cell salts dissolved in tepid water and applied to the area: Calc fluor, Ferr phos, Mag phos, Kali mur.

Again, let your pain be your guide as to how long and how often you taking the remedies

Picture
STRAINS
According to American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, a sprain is a stretch and/or tear of a ligament and a strain is an injury to a muscle or tendon. Sprains generally occur in ankles, knees and wrists and strains generally occur in the back or leg, particularly the hamstring. Both injuries can range in severity and neither is necessarily worse than the other — it depends on the person and the injury.

Conventional medicine again recommends RICE for strains (see above).

Homeopathically, Arnica is the best place to start and may be all that you need. “Forcing, twisting, wrenching strains and tears are most likely to respond to Arnica if it is prescribed within 24 hours of the trauma” (Thomas 2000).

The above list of sprain remedies can also be applied to muscle strains with these notations:

Rhus tox may be especially helpful in injuries due to lifting or over-exertion.

Bryonia is especially well suited to intercostal and rib injuries.

Ruta is also useful for injuries due to over-exertion. Follows Arnica well to help aid in recovery.

Traumeel or T-Relief as it is now known is a nice combination remedy to help with strains. (See below for some Traumeel research.)

Cell Salts which may be of help for strains (Weintraub 1999):
In addition to the above listed cell salts:
  • Calc sulph, Mag phos: for muscles strained from overwork and a sensation of heat
  • Mag phos: for muscle spasms

Picture
BICYCLE FALLS
Number one: wear a helmet. Høye (2018) found helmet use reduced serious head injury by 60%.

We just watched an interesting documentary called Bikes of Wrath where 5 young guys re-created the journey from Steinbeck’s novel of a similar name, but this time on bikes. None of them had any head injuries, but they did indeed have some strains and perhaps a sprain — in his case, it was his elbow. They certainly could have benefitted from carrying a little remedy kit with them, that's for sure!

Sprains and strains are covered above, let's move on to cuts, scrapes and contusions.

Once again, Arnica is the first stop for any injury. If the fall was big enough, take a dose of Aconite for any shock.

Picture
ROAD RASH, see this link for more information

Ooof! It’s been a long time since I’ve had to pick gravel out of my knee, but I can still remember how unpleasant that is!

In this case, an oral dose of Arnica may be helpful because there is probably some element of bruising that will accompany the road rash, but remember DO NOT to apply Arnica to broken skin.

I have no idea who this group is, but they have some clear images indicating whether hospital treatment should be sought following a skinned knee.

Assuming the wound is not too bad and does not need professional medical care, clean the area and remove any debris. The Wound Care Society has some nice instructions.

Calendula is where you want to start homeopathically for this injury — after the wound has been sufficiently cleaned out, that is. Calendula can be taken orally, or a Calendula tincture or cream can be applied. If you have the homeopathic pellet, but not a tincture, dissolve the Calendula pellet in some clean water and apply that to the wound. Hypericum can be used in this way, as well.

Ledum is useful if the wound is deeper. It may be cool to the touch and very painful.

Hypericum: like Calendula, Hypericum is very good and soothing to use topically. In fact, they can work very well together. Helios offers a lovely combination cream**. A Hypericum wound is very sensitive and is definitely indicated if any nerves are involved, like fingertips or toes.

Hamamelis is very good if the wound continues to bleed. Arnica, too, can help with bleeding, but Hamamelis would be the next stop. Also very good for hematomas which may form as a result of the injury.

Cell Salts which may be of help for cuts and abrasions (Weintraub 1999):
  • Ferr phos for abrasions and wounds; topical application of powdered tables applied directly to the injured parts
  • Calc sulph: for cuts that are slow to heal
  • Kali mur, Ferr phos: for swelling

Picture
Bruising

Guess what the first remedy is for bruising? You’re so clever! Yes, it’s Arnica! The bruise is painful and they don’t want anybody to touch it!

Bellis perennis if the bruising is deeper, and especially if the bruising is in the abdominal area.

Ledum shows up again here, too -- if the area feels better with cold application.

Ruta or Symphytum if the bone is bruised or the periosteum is affected (the tissues between the bones and the skin — think of the shins or cheekbones).

Cell Salts which may be of help for bruising (Weintraub 1999):
  • Ferr phos for any bleeding into tissues -- may also apply powder directly to the area
  • Calc fluor for bruises affecting the bones
  • Kali phos for all-over feelign of being bruised
  • Kali mur for hard, blue-black bruises

To make a compress: dissolve 5 of each cell salt tablet and apply locally; take internally also: Ferr phos, Kali mur.

Picture
HEAD INJURIES
First off — consult a physician if you have hit your head, whether you were wearing a helmet, or not.

Once again, Arnica is the place to start. Not only because it’s the go-to first remedy for any accident or injury, but in this case because Arnica is the first choice homeopathic remedy for head injury, period.

Bonus! One of my favorite homeopathic books for injuries, First Aid with Homeopathy by Dr. Manuel Mateu Ratera, has a PDF of his Head Injury pages available online.

The next-in-line remedy for head injuries is Nat sulph (see cell salts below). Like Arnica, Nat sulph can be used for residual effects from old head injuries.

Why choose one over the other? Arnica has the general trauma/injury element to it.

When to choose Nat sulph? Nat sulph has a slight edge in terms of residual effects from head injuries: concussions afterward, migraines afterward. However, Nat sulph is more clearly indicated when there is vertigo following a head injury or depression or mental dullness sets in after a head injury.

For some research on mild traumatic brain injuries and homeopathy, see Chapman et al. (1999).

Cell Salts which may be of help for head injuries (Weintraub 1999):
Calc fluor for bruises on the cranial bones, with hard, rough, uneven lumps
Ferr phos for bruising to the head, with pain
≈ Nat sulph as a cell salt may be used, as well.

These homeopathic remedies, Arnica in particular, should accompany you when you set out for any physical activities this summer. Or, better yet, purchase a little kit to throw in your bag. Taproots has nice one*.
